Princess Abeer Al Saud to Host Inspiring Session on Nature Finance and Conservation: “From Snow Dunes to Sand Seas”

On December 9th, 2024, Princess Abeer Al Saud, a distinguished member of the Middle East Chapter of the Explorers Club, will lead an extraordinary session at the IUCN Pavilion titled "From Snow Dunes to Sand Seas: Exploring Earth's Extreme Deserts." This event, set to take place during COP16, will shine a light on groundbreaking approaches to conservation and the application of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in some of the world's most extreme environments.

Abeer Al Saud’s pioneering spirit and achievements are inspiring. As the first Saudi woman to reach Antarctica's southernmost regions and a seasoned explorer of Saudi Arabia's Empty Quarter, she brings a unique perspective bridging polar and desert ecosystems. She is not only a Fellow of the Explorers Club but also the first GCC and Arabian Peninsula representative to serve as an Antarctic Ambassador with the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO). Her expertise and passion make her an influential advocate for the Rights of Nature (RON), an emerging framework recognizing nature's intrinsic value and legal rights.

The session will delve into how these principles can transform conservation efforts in two of Earth's largest deserts: Antarctica's snow dunes and the Empty Quarter's expansive sand seas. By drawing lessons from Antarctica's innovative conservation initiatives, including the Antarctic Rights Initiative, the discussion will explore the implementation of similar frameworks in arid desert ecosystems like the Empty Quarter. These efforts aim to foster climate resilience, sustainable resource management, and biodiversity preservation.

Abeer Al Saud will be joined by Roberta Bosu, an environmental strategist and activist with extensive experience in sustainability and climate communication. Together, they will engage attendees in a rich dialogue about the interconnectedness of global ecosystems, emphasizing how NbS and RON can pave the way for a sustainable future across diverse climates and geographies.

This event promises to inspire explorers, conservationists, and policymakers alike, as it highlights innovative solutions for safeguarding Earth's most fragile landscapes.
